Wordpress and phpBB3 Integration

Postby Soaknfused on Sat Jul 26, 2008 1:02 pm

There has been a lot of talk around lately from people looking to integrate Wordpress and phpBB3. I have found/made/edited a combination of files and resources to package a working integration platform to get these two great products working together.

Currently this supports phpBB Gold up to the current phpBB 3.0.2 as well as phpBB-SEO version 3.0.2 when running in mixed mode and utilizing the 'Day and Name" structure for Wordpress Permalinks (make sure to add the Wordpress entries to your .htaccess file)

this project was originally started by jhong over at WP-United.com but he seems to be missing in action as he has had no posts on his site in a very very long time. I hope to continue development of this project and will welcome any and all volunteers willing to assist with this.

Please take the time to read the "read me first" file and all install notes for details on this before you start installing it. Most importantly BACK UP EVERYTHING FIRST

As with all MODS that are in development it may/can/will cause your site to implode and be reborn as a clone of Rosie O'Donnell site. I take no responsibility for anything you do to your site/files/databases etc. However, I will be here to assist you should anything go wrong (read everything first, back up your files and everything will be fine)

Any support issues or questions can be post in this forum.

happy modding

AWESOME is all I can say. I have been looking for a solution like this for ages. I am so excited to find a working solution for this. Every other option I have found has not worked. The only question I have for you so far is if I must use the .htaccess information for Wordpress too... Right now I am using it without the permalink settings you mentioned and it seems to work. Advice on this would be great. thanks again for a great mod.

In my experience (running this on 3 sites) I have found it to be needed. If yours is working without that setting, I would see if it goes. Try posting a few blog entries and see if things hold up. Using the re-write options in Wordpress is advisable anyhow, so you should use it for SEO purposes. Up to you, but that is my advice.

Thanks for putting your time into this.

I've installed your plugin because I'm interested in cross posting: 1 thread in the forum for each blog post in wordpress. This way the discussion happens in the forum instead of blog. Questions:

1) Could you make a simpler plugin that oes the cross posting only? If you need inspiration, here's the vbulletin version of what I'd like for phpbb/wordpress: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=94443

2) Which file can you edit to change what appears in the phpbb3 forum for a cross post from wordpress?

Thanks again for your time

If you could be more specific about what you would like to see in the cross posted item I can perhaps assist you in finding what to change. Are you referring to the content or how it is laid out on the post? A lot of those variables are due to how Wordpress stores information and has been left the way it is for the most part because stripping any more information from the source just complicates things more. If you have an example, or a specific format you would prefer, please reply here with specifics and I will do my best to accommodate.

As for a more simple solution, if you just simply want the blog post as a forum post and the integration of templates and login information is more than you need, perhaps you may want to look for a rss post bot and just use that to post content from the rss of your blog to the forum of your choice? or have I missing your idea there totally?

Thanks for your reply. Here's an example of what I'm looking for

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2008/0 ... e-of-life/

Bottom of the post has a link "Discuss this post in the Steve Pavlina forum." Click on it, and you get in one category that has threads for each article on Pavlina's blog. This is the thread for that blog entry: http://www.stevepavlina.com/forums/stev ... -blog.html Text is simple as you can see: "Use this thread to discuss the following entry from Steve Pavlina's blog:" followed by the link to the original blog post.

So i'm looking for:
1) Each time I publish a blog, a thread is being made in a category on the forum.
2) Ability to change the text in the thread, something simple like in Pavlina's example.

WP-united is too complicate for what I want to do, hence why I asked for a simpler mod. I don't know if something like a rss post bot could do it, but if can, I'd appreciate a link or so. Thanks!

Now I understand what you are going for, this mod is perhaps quite a bit more than you need. I assume you are the only blog author on your site? if the need for user integration is not present (wanting to give your users their own blog) then this is an overly complicated solution that you don't need)

I would advise you to look into a mod currently in development over at phpbb.com by member Smix and while his mod is still in development it is functional and he is great with support. You can find his mod HERE.

I hope this points you in a direction that will get you where you want to go. Also, if there is anything else I can assist you with, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Soaknfused,

Today I downloaded WP-United and installed it. Works like clockwork!
A few questions though. I'm new to both WordPress and phpBB3, so it might be that these questions are obvious for the more experienced user.

1. I installed phpBB3 inside WordPress. When I access my site, it starts with the forum, but I want it to start with the blog. How do I change this?
2. How do I add a link to the forum in the WP menubar?
3. I want people to only be able to react on the crosspost in the forum and not in the blog. How do I do that? I know you can turn of the replies in WP, but I want a link there to the crosspost on the forum.

Hope you can help. And tnx for picking up this great project!
